Does Brain Training Last Or "Wear Off?" / by Meeray Ghaly

This is a common question asked.

Because NeurOptimal® is a learning task, like learning to read, once you know, you can’t “un-know” - so the effects do remain with you.

However, your brain is living tissue and it can get thrown off course by trauma, general anaesthetic, unhealthy lifestyle, or just the accumulative stresses of daily life.

When this happens, a session or two can help you get back back on track and recover optimal flow and functioning.

Even if you come back many years later, the brain recognises the NeurOptimal® process and is reminded of the earlier shifts - like reading, riding a bike, or any other learnt skill.

It can find its way back relatively rapidly – much more quickly than the first time you did the training.

So if you did a fairly complete initial training (say 20-30 sessions), and then have a major challenge like an illness, the loss of a job or a relationship, or even a head injury or anaesthetic, your brain can quickly and efficiently use the information it receives from NeurOptimal® to reorganise itself and “find its way back”.

So, how long before I start to notice changes?

When the CNS is under chronic stress, it is focussing on survival not “thrival".

So if we can help with survival, it makes thriving more possible.

This is Abraham Maslow's theory of the hierarchy of human needs, see Image Reference.

His theory suggests that we cannot achieve higher levels of self actualisation and inner personal growth when our basic human needs are not met, and I believe the same is true for any brain training.

We work from the base level and build upward.

survive   >   thrive

And when life throws things off course, and you feel in 'survival mode', training the brain as a whole, enables the whole central nervous system to "settle" and function better.

Brain Spa time!

Your central nervous system does the rest.

Also, most people create poor habits and negative mental patterns throughout their lives without even knowing it. I certainly did.

NeurOptimal® is like holding a mirror up

to show the overexerted

and messy areas of your brain

for your central nervous system to clean up as it sees fit.

Over time, the brain’s normal functioning is affected by trauma, personal experience, physical injury, ageing, and other life events.

NeurOptimal® neurofeedback merely observes and monitors the brain’s activity, informing the brain, in real-time, when it is doing.

The brain’s self-healing capacity then begins the process of balancing the central nervous system, ultimately to its optimal level.

For the client, the process is harmless as nothing enters the brain.

Instead, the experience is often reported as relaxing and pleasant.

People who do this “workout” for the brain often say they feel better able to concentrate and focus on tasks, and that they feel more prepared to deal with life’s unexpected turns.

They find it easier to handle situations that had always been a systematic source of tension.

I know this has been true of my own personal experience;

Actually, I still remember the day an avocado seed fell onto my freshly cleaned kitchen floor - and where there would have been at least some annoyance or tension rise up inside me, or at worst, a feeling of 'defeat', I distinctly remember feeling calm and even curious as the seed rolled away leaving a pale-green trail.

There wasn't a physical guarding that came up in my body - the reactivity just wasn't there. I knew neurofeedback was working, without effort, because I felt 'mindful' and centred.

Interestingly, I have often taken stock of how my training is going in the kitchen.

Many training sessions later, soda water burst everywhere and not only was there no annoyance, the whole thing was hysterically funny.

My brain was able to let me know I didn't have to sweat the small stuff!

So, there was no access to previous tensions.

And the difference was noticeable.

Often people describe feeling more confident, relaxed, focused, creative, more resilient and clarity to name a few.
