How Many Neurofeedback Sessions Will I Need? by Meeray Ghaly


Because everyone’s central nervous system is unique, so is the number of sessions they will need.



Neuroptimal is a training, not a treatment.

It trains the whole CNS to function more efficiently. 



Therefore, there is no "prescription" for "x,y,z" problem.

Everyone responds differently and each session is different, NeurOptimal dances with your brain in a dynamical way. 

While we cannot predict what your brain will do with the information it receives from neurofeedback training, however, we can offer a few guidelines.


One of the features of NeurOptimal® is that it is very safe because the person is able to change at their own rate without any forcing of the process.

Some people can expect to notice changes in the first few sessions, some by ten sessions, while others achieve their goals by 20 to 30 sessions, and some may require more, I have known of some people with chronic conditions, e.g. Lyme disease to include training as part of their ongoing management.

You are in the drivers seat and it's up to you how you want to train and when.

I say to clients they can come as often or as seldom as they need and trust their brain will let us know what is going to be best for them. 

By not setting down a "prescriptive" number of sessions, we have found that people are more likely to see and tune into the changes that occur from session to session. These changes can be subtle but profound. I have observed that clients sometimes are primed to expect change that feels like a "sledge hammer" -  thankfully, because the system is gentle and safe, it does not work this way. 



Early on, clients commonly report feeling better rested, having an improved outlook and engaging more effectively with colleagues or loved ones.

Changes you experience may or may not be related to the goals you came in with, but generally speaking, any kind of shift is a positive indication that the NeurOptimal® brain training is working as designed.

Eventually this calmer, more clear way of being becomes the “new normal”. Only if a negative event throws the individual off - e.g. a bad day at work, chemicals, a knock on the head - might they drop into the way they felt before. But generally, they will not dip as deeply into emotional discomfort and will more than likely bounce back from challenging situations much more quickly and easily.


Tracking progress together is something people often find helpful;

this is where we look at the

Duration, Intensity and Frequency of the Shifts experienced (DIFS).

For example, some people notice headaches that used to last days and days,

after beginning brain training,

they notice them lasting a few hours only, feeling less intense and occurring significantly less often.




You can stop training whenever you feel ready and simply return for tune-up sessions as required.

A general guideline is 20 sessions are necessary to help with issues bothering you in the "here and now"; 30 or more sessions for "deeper" problems that originated earlier in life. You can expect the gains to be cumulative over the course. Our recommendation is that if you’ve experienced significant challenges / trauma to have between 20-30 and track the progress as you go. 

Some clients continue training on a monthly or bi-monthly basis to great effect.

Of course, the frequency of tune-ups depends on how stressful of a life you are living.

The more training you do, the more ingrained the positive results will be.

Just like learning a new language or a physical skill like skiing, the more sessions you have, the stronger the skill development.



And training with NeurOptimal is actually a learning task – you get results because your brain is actively learning, even if the learning is not conscious.

In the same way that once you learn how to read, you can’t 'unlearn it', your brain doesn’t forget what it learns through Neurofeedback.




My Top Tips:

-  Clients who suspend expectation are more likely to see shifts sooner, because they are 'present and open' to seeing change before a certain "block" of sessions is completed. 

- If you think of the analogy of clearing out your garage - sometimes it can look at lot more chaotic before you make a

"give away",


"recycling" and

"keep" pile.

And then put everything back neatly and organised (think Marie Kondo!) 

Neurofeedback training is a bit like that - Marie Kondo for the brain! 

At first, it can feel a bit messier while your brain works out what is needed and what is no longer useful to you - then it gets more organised and settled.
